Compared to a lot of f2p games I've played in the past it is far more friendlier to free players, especially if you're mostly just interested in the quests and storyline content. Been too busy / doing other stuff so I haven't played in the past few months, but I got through pretty much the entirety of the available quests and main storylines (up to the end of the Liyue chain) running free to play with only 4 star characters. Game was reasonably generous with rewards and gems for Adventure Rank level ups and quest completions. That said once I had ran out of quests and was mostly doing dailies to level up characters and weapons the rewards and free gems did slow down considerably.

If you're looking to go far in Spiral Abyss, get particular 5 star banner characters and weapons, or level cap a bunch of characters though it is hard / long slog playing free, so that is where the gacha really got pushed / tempted. Not sure if Spiral Abyss has been tweaked since then, but I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that most of the people who were able to fully clear all of Spiral Abyss were hardcore whales in order to get a ton of cap level characters to get through all the floors.

Free gems and pity pull counting give you a chance to get a character or weapon you want if you're patient and frugal, but it isn't a guarantee that you'll get the banner advertised 5 star even if you hit your pity. Throw in the fact that the weapon and character banner pity counts are separate and it is a lot harder / slower to get a 5 from both since you pretty much have to pick hitting your pity on one or the other. Then there is the whole aspect that duplicate characters unlock special abilities / perks and it takes rolling them 6 additional times to fully cap their constellation. That is where it can get really expensive, so I'm not surprised Genshin raked in that much revenue if they had enough people willing to drop a lot of cold, hard cash on "perfection".

Comeback, you're missing out by skipping Inazuma.

SA is still the same. Still can be cleared with C0 heroes. If you care, you can build "the national team" and plow through it easily too.

But I don't care about the Abyss. It's boring to me so I just get my BP stars and gtfo, despite having a lot of 5☆.

That's really on people who can't control themselves and watch too much YouTube.

Genshin Impact has had the highest first-year gaming revenue of all time:

MiHoYo's Genshin VS other gambling companies:

Not bad for a "Chinese BoTW rip-off".

Japanese companies (not named Nintendo) can only dream about such numbers. F2P/GAAS is here to stay, so maybe it's time for Square to actually do something about GI dominance...

It shows what's wrong with gaming and a sad testament for the world.

Addiction combined with the ease of spending is a hell of a combo. Being able to drop hundreds of dollars with a few button presses when you are in the grips that addiction is… not good. At least with drugs you have to get out of your house a brave the world to procure more.

I did Genshin for the first year on an Samsung Galaxy s20 Ultra. The first month I played for free. The next three or four months I paid for the battlepass, which is, I think, 10 bucks. If you've ever paid a subscription for a game like WoW or Final Fantasy 14, you'll feel like you've gotten your money's worth, so long as the interesting content lasts. There is a LOT of stuff to do and a lot of world to explore without paying a cent, and the stuff you get from clearing the non-daily zones and quests is better than the battlepass rewards as long as the content lasts. The quests are varied and interesting. The characters are well-voiced and acted. I didn't like Paimon at first, but the longer I was stuck listening to her the more her stupid lines would crack me up, and I actually looked forward to the cutscenes.

You have the opportunity to whale out and spend a bazillion bucks to have what you want Right Now, but with a battlepass only and a few lucky 5 star draws, I cleared every level of the Abyss with 3 stars.

I stopped playing after the ice mountain region, mainly because there was nothing to do but dailies and grind to level up new team compositions or try to outfit by best comps with 5 star gear--but I was already crushing the Abyss, so I didn't see much of a point. The new content looks fun, but I don't have a lot of free time right now, and if I've got 30 minutes where I can play a game on my phone I've been playing Wild Rift.

That's a shame, you should totally download it on PC or PS and give it a proper time. There's a cross save feature now. So you can play wherever and whenever you want.

Inazuma and other new content they added to the game after the Ice Mountain is worth it.

Samsung Fold 3 for me. Looks and plays amazing.

The West will never be able to create Gacha whales to the level of the Japanese. Because they'll never create the right characters to entice people to spend their money.

Characters like this are why games like Fate Grand Order (the previous standard-bearer of Gacha "it prints money") keep on going strong (despite shitty rates):
(yes this is the actual design and outfit for the recent character Zenobia)

Mmmmm... Gameplay...

Yeah, I agree, west can't cater to JP/CN whales unfortunately.

But in the same time GI is relatively tame, so GI designs is pretty doable for modern Sony or Microsoft. Hell, Sony has probably money hatted MiHoYo to keep GI from Xbox.

I really hope that we will get a GI like gacha from Japanese or Korean companies. FG O and other 2D chibi games can't put fire under MiHoYo's ass and that's a big problem.

Well, played a lot of Genshin and that game is quality. I mean is it also a very simple concept. Make a F2P but focus on the "Play" part. You can play that game and get more than full game 60$ worth of content without paying a penny.

it's not younger generation shit.

It's straight up loser shit. Being that infatuated with any video game characters is pathetic. Worst that they spend endless amount of money to dress them up. Ironically it's the same people that shit on Fortnite.

People dont like TLoU because how their characters look. They enjoy the story and how the characters are written. The characters have to be utilitarian. You have people that cant like characters that arent dressed like complete sluts. This whole schoolgirls with glimpses of their underwear aesthetic all these Genshin Impact characters have is obvious.

That being said, Sony is losing alot of potential money not going hard on micro-transactions and FTP games. I say give the losers what they want. I see Sony investing in these companies, then making the games themselves.

There's no visible underwear in Genshin Impact. It's heavily censored. It's impossible to take an "upskirt" view because characters models become invisible from a certain angles.

Nobody said the game wasn't played by people of various ages. Im saying the same people that talk shit about fornite will turn around and play genshin impact.

No underwear shots? What on earth are you talking about. The skirts are so short you have to see them.

Never said Genshin Impact wasnt chinese, it could be made by Irish developers. Never was the point.

Im commenting on this fascination with "waifu" school girl characters. Feels embarrassing to play. Which ultimately I dont even care. What I am commenting on how people seem to think that people care how sexualized or unrealistically anime characters are. They dont. "The Last of Us" characters are designed according to their world, and make completely sense.

The LOSERS are those who are pouring money into these games.

Since you have no idea what you're talking about.

There is 2 entire skins in the game. 2. TWO.

1 of them was given away for free. Now both can be purchased directly without any gambling involved.

Both are absolutely terrible and hardly made any money.

Hm... It would wary greatly I think. Some people in the OT played for the whole year without spending any money.

I purchase BP and gem subscriptions. Both are extremely cheap compared to any AAA or even indie games I play on PC and PS5.
Like I said previously, it's not big money at all. I spent on gas and taxi DAILY more , than monthly GI subscriptions costs.

My biggest purchase was during the anniversary celebration. The only time I bought gems directly and spent 100$ for the biggest pack.(I got x2 gems bonus)

That's totally on me, it wasn't out of necessity or something like that. I wanted a premium hero and wanted to make her as strong as possible. Luckily to me I was able to achieve it because her strongest constellations were C2/3 and not C6. I wasn't going to buy another 100$ pack or something like that. Thanks to that anniversary pulling now I have ALL standard 5☆ heroes and still busy upgrading/leveling them up.

You need to buy gems 💎 only if you want ALL heroes, want a lot of constellations (duplicates) or want to have a signature weapon for new limited hero.

Truth is, nobody want or need to have all heroes. You can pick and choose and save up for heroes that you like.

Constellations are absolutely unnecessary to have a great time and enjoy the game. All my premium characters except for 1 are at constellation 0.

Signature weapons are also absolutely unnecessary. It's a nice bonus to have and they look cool, but you don't need them to complete even the hardest content.

In fact, free non-premium 4☆ heroes with 3☆ and 4☆ weapons can clear ALL content in Genshin Impact.

About $50 in Welkins and Battle Passes across a few months. PS5 hour count says I'm at around 300 hours. Right now I'm on hiatus as I'm playing a lot of FFXIV but I'll be back sometime, it's a fun game and perfectly playable and enjoyable at the F2P tier. Even high level abyss content is doable, in time, with the F2P characters and whatever you get from fates out of normal progression. There is no need to spend a dime on it to have a good time.

There's very little ground between light spender and whale.
This is exactly why I never spent any money on the game.
I really like the game, but what you get from paying is so insignificant... unless you're willing to spend hundreds.

It really doesn't seem like it's worth it, I can't accept the idea of paying 15€ for 980 crystals, that's... only 6 pulls, not even a multi pull! I just find the prices incredibly crazy, since for the equivalent one random 4* object, I could buy an actual full game on steam in sales, or an indie game. The biggest pack, 6480 crystals, is 100€, and that's only 40 pull (unless you count the bonus if you buy it only once), that's not even enough to get to a 5* pity. That's crazy. If you're someone who buys pack often, you will need 200€ to get to 80 pulls and get your 5*, which only has a 50/50 chance of being the one you want.

Really, I love the game and I wouldn't mind spending a bit of money in it, only if the prices were realistic. I know what I'm going to say will sound crazy since people are now used to these crazy prices, but to me, a multi (X10) pull should be something like 1€. It would between 7 and 9€ to reach the 5* pity, which seems more realistic when you compare it to characters in fighting games for example usually being sold for something between 4 and 8€. And that's still considering the 50/50 system is in place, so it might actually be 18€ for your character if you are unlucky, I think that's already wayyyy enough money for just a character.

Even the battle pass to me seems expensive for what it is, a little bit of quality of life for 10€ a month, that's 120€ a year for just a few bonuses...
The thing that seems the most worth it is the Blessing of the welking moon, it's in my opinion still a bit expensive for what it is, but it's certainly more realistic than the other things on the store.

These are all the reasons I'm just staying free to play. Love the game but the prices they ask for are just unreasonable, I don't understand how it works.

These are the characters I own as a F2P only player. I'm not sure I would even really want more right now, it's already such a struggle to build them because of the artifact RNG (biggest problem of the game in my opinion, worse than the gacha pulls by far).

Probably the only thing(outside of primos ofc) that makes people to login daily and farm. If you could easily get a perfect roll, you'd stopped playing until the next update after getting it. Plus, it's not just any RNG. It's a rigged RNG which is heavily prioritize bad/useless stats.
I know what I'm going to say will sound crazy since people are now used to these crazy prices, but to me, a multi (X10) pull should be something like 1€.

Yeah... well, yet here we are: GI is above GTA V online lol
BTW GTA Online prices are crazy inflated now. Any new POS car now costs millions of dollars.

MiHoYo is a bunch of ridiculously cheap and greedy bastards.

Unfortunately, judging by their numbers it looks like it's the way to go on the current market lol

It's inspired by other games, sure, but no, it doesn't simply copy things the way Genshin Impact does. It's impossible not to see this if you have played both games.
So what if it is?

Its common to not waste time and resources on creating something new if it's already been done well and can be imitated within a shorter time window.

You've only hit 3 currencies so far? You have much to discover.

Yea they purposely distance in-game currencies with real money to make you not think about the conversion rates or real prices of things. It's a known tactic.

You can approach the game in 2 ways - completely F2P, or willing to spend. Sticking with F2P is a lot harder and you will constantly be nudged to buy "just a little" or "just this one pack". It's insidious, but that's the gacha market for you. Regardless, you can still enjoy the game at all spending levels, but just be aware that their goal is to take a F2P player and make them a spender. So you're always going to be fighting off urges to buy that pack or that daily login deal etc.

As long as your goal in playing a GaaS game is just having fun by playing, and not unlocking stuff or be a completionist, it is safe I think.

Really impressive for something that's free to play, on mobile and riffing off BoTW.

The element chemistry is well done, the combat is fun, the mini-puzzles are decent, the art and world are gorgeous.

Ignoring this because of prejudices will not serve your quest for more enjoyment.
